24 | Is Your Website Bringing You CLients?

Let’s talk about something most handyman business owners avoid… your website.

It might be up and running. Maybe you had it built a while ago. Maybe you DIY’d it. Maybe it looks good.

But here’s the real question:

Is your website actually getting you clients?

Because if your phone isn’t ringing, your calendar isn’t filling up, and you’re not getting inquiries—you’ve got a problem. One that likely starts with your website.

In this post, I’m diving into handyman website marketing tips that actually make a difference. We’re talking about how to figure out whether your website is doing its job, and what to do if it’s not.

You don’t need to be a tech genius or a marketing wizard. You just need to understand how a website is supposed to work for your business. Let’s break it down together.

What Does It Mean for a Website to Convert?

When someone lands on your site, they should take action.

That action could be:

  • Filling out your form

  • Calling you

  • Sending you a message

If that’s not happening, your site isn’t converting. And that means it’s not doing what it’s supposed to do—turning lookers into leads.

Most Websites Convert at 3–5%... But You Can Do Better

Across most industries, a typical website converts at about 3–5%. That means only 3 to 5 out of every 100 people will reach out.

But handyman websites can do better. A lot better.

Because we’re in home services. And people don’t land on a handyman site unless they actually need something done.

If your site is built for small jobs and immediate needs, a well-optimized website can convert as high as 10 to 13%.

Now, if your website is more remodel-focused, with bigger jobs and longer timelines, you’ll probably still be in that 3–5% range. Those clients take longer to decide, shop around, and wait for quotes.

Neither is right or wrong. You just need to know what kind of clients you’re trying to reach, and design your website to match.

Work Backwards: Let the Math Show You What You Need

You use math all day in your work. Measuring cuts. Figuring angles. Quoting jobs.

Your website should be no different.

Let’s say you want to make $8,000 per month and your average job is $400. That means you need to book 20 jobs a month.

If you close 1 out of every 3 inquiries, you need 60 inquiries to get those 20 jobs.

And if your website converts at 5%, you’ll need 1,200 website visitors a month to get those 60 leads.

If your site converts at 10%, you only need 600 visitors.

Change any number, job size, close rate, traffic, and the math changes too. It’s not emotional. It’s just numbers.

If You Have a Great Website But No Visitors…

This is where a lot of business owners get stuck.

They have a great-looking website that might even convert well, but barely anyone’s seeing it.

Let’s say you’re converting at 10%. That’s awesome.

But if only 50 people visit your site this month, that’s 5 inquiries. And maybe 1 or 2 jobs.

That’s not going to cut it.

Even the best websites can’t do anything for your business if nobody’s visiting them.

Where Should That Website Traffic Come From?

Here’s how I break down traffic sources for home service businesses:

1. Ads

The fastest but most expensive way to get traffic. Facebook ads and Google search ads work well, but you have to be ready to pay. And if you’re using Google LSA, you must answer your phone, those leads come in fast.

2. SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

This is how your website shows up when someone searches “handyman near me” or “TV mounting in [your city]”. If you’re not showing up in search, you’re missing out.

3. Google Business Profile

This is your free local listing. It needs to be set up properly and linked to your website. It helps you show up in local map results and builds credibility fast, especially when you have reviews.

4. Referrals

Warm leads convert better. Past clients, friends, and neighbors might refer you, but you want them to say, “Go to their website, you can book them there.” Not just, “Here’s their number.”

5. Other Marketing (Social Media, Flyers, Truck Wraps)

These work great, but only when they direct people back to your website. That’s where the magic happens.

Your website should be your marketing home base. Your front door. Everything else should point people there.

What to Fix if Your Website Isn’t Converting

Let’s say you are getting traffic… but people aren’t reaching out.

Here’s what I look for when auditing handyman websites:

1. Follow the Data

Check how many people are visiting and what they’re doing. Use Google Analytics or built-in tools. If you don’t track, you can’t fix it.

2. Make It Easy

Have one clear call to action. Don’t make people choose. Use something like:

  • “Request a Quote”

  • “Book Your Service”

  • “Schedule an Estimate”

Put that CTA everywhere, homepage, services, about, even the bottom of long pages.

3. Spell It Out

Tell people what to do and what will happen next.
Don’t just say “Contact Us.” Instead, try:

“Click below to schedule your handyman service. We’ll confirm within one business day.”

4. Build Trust with Personal Touches

People are letting you into their homes. Help them feel confident.

  • Add photos of yourself or your team

  • Include a friendly “About” section

  • Show before-and-after photos

  • Feature reviews or testimonials with real names or faces

This makes you feel real. Not just another random contractor on the internet.

5. Explain the Process

People want to know what to expect. Lay it out in 3 simple steps:

  1. Request your service

  2. We’ll confirm and schedule

  3. You relax while we take care of it

The clearer it is, the more likely they are to take action.

6. Don’t Send Them Elsewhere

Put your social media links in the footer, not the header. Don’t send them off your site. Keep their focus on booking you.

7. Make Your Phone Number Clickable

Especially on mobile. Use a clickable “tel:” link so they can tap and call. And make it trackable.

Your Website Should Work as Hard as You Do

If your website isn’t helping you hit your goals, it’s either:

  • Not getting enough traffic, or

  • Not built to convert

But here’s the good news, both problems are fixable.

With clear messaging, a strong call to action, a trustworthy vibe, and traffic from SEO and referrals, your website can become your hardest-working sales tool.
